"Speech language therapy can have a huge impact on your life, at school, at work, at home and in the community.

Communication is the key to everything."

Hi, I'm Mel Dakin, speech language therapist at Speech Central.

Communication is at the heart of who we are and how we interact with the world around us. As a speech therapist, I aim to provide therapy that is evidence-based and tailored to the needs of anyone dealing with communication difficulties. Working alongside a child (or adult) and their family is the best way to achieve goals and really make a difference for that individual.

I have 10+ years experience working with a variety of clients, previously across the wider Auckland region for the Auckland District Health Board and more recently here in Taupō with Speech Central. I currently enjoy a great deal of variety in my work as a speech language therapist, working with children's communication difficulties, adults with acquired voice or language difficulties and brain injury.

I am also the Community Aphasia* Advisor for AphasiaNZ Charitable Trust in the Central Lakes area. provding support and raising awareness for people with aphasia. *Aphasia is an acquired language disorder often resulting from stroke.

I am a mum to 2 young boys and we live locally in Taupō. My husband and I relocated our family here several years ago to enjoy a more balanced lifestyle and to embrace our love of the outdoors.

"In speech therapy we work together with a child and their important people.

This way we can set the child on the path to thrive in their world, not just now, but as they continue through life."

I am Kathleen, my clients are at the heart of everything I do. I aim to provide speech language therapy individualised to your/ your child and family's needs.

I have practised as a Speech Language Therapist for over 10 years. I ran a paediatic private practice in Auckland for two years before moving to Taupō.Prior to private practice I have worked at District Health Boards and The Ministry of Education.

My  interests include:

  • Speech sound disorders (e.g. difficulty saying some sounds correctly, unclear speech, lisps ect.)

  • Language difficulties (e.g. vocabulary, difficulty putting words together, grammar mistakes etc.)

  • Young children with no or few words

  • Autism spectrum disorders and social communication difficulties

  • Reading and writing difficulties with underlying speech/ language/ phonological awareness difficulties

  • Accent modification therapy
